The first day of a cruise should feel like the start of a holiday, not a race against the clock. The Brisbane International Cruise Terminal at Luggage Point is modern and well organised, but it is not somewhere most people drive to every week. Here is how to get there smoothly, with your luggage, your family and your sanity intact.

Where the Brisbane cruise terminal is

The Brisbane International Cruise Terminal sits at Luggage Point in Pinkenba, at the mouth of the Brisbane River. It is close to Brisbane Airport and the Gateway Motorway, and well away from the city centre and the river's inner wharves.

That location is worth stressing, because Brisbane has had more than one cruise berth over the years. Some smaller ships have used the older Portside Wharf at Hamilton. Before you plan anything, check your cruise documents to confirm exactly which terminal your ship is departing from.

Good to know

Luggage Point is an industrial port area, and navigation apps sometimes take drivers the long way round. A chauffeur who knows the approach roads and the drop-off area takes that uncertainty out of the day.

Because the terminal is so close to the airport, it is also a natural place to combine a flight and a cruise. We cover that in combining a flight and a cruise below.

Embarkation timing: follow your cruise line

Every cruise line manages boarding a little differently. Most allocate passengers a check-in window, and some stagger arrivals to keep queues manageable. We do not publish general arrival times, because the only times that matter are the ones on your own boarding documents.

Here is how we plan your pickup:

  1. You tell us your ship, your sailing date and the check-in window from your cruise line.
  2. We work out the drive time from your pickup address, allowing for the day of the week and likely traffic.
  3. We add a sensible buffer, so a slow patch on the motorway does not eat into your check-in window. It is the same approach we use for airport transfers to the Gold Coast.
  4. Your chauffeur confirms the pickup time with you before the day.

Arriving well before your window rarely helps, as you may simply wait outside the terminal. Arriving late can be stressful. Our aim is to have you at the kerb comfortably within your allocated time.

Felix tip

Keep your boarding documents, passports and any medication in a small bag you carry yourself. Everything else can go with the main luggage once you are at the terminal.

Luggage handling on cruise day

Cruise luggage is a category of its own. Formal outfits, swimwear, shoes for every occasion and the occasional bulky souvenir on the way home all add up. For a family, it can easily mean more bags than will fit in a standard car boot.

  • Pack with the vehicle in mind: let us know how many large suitcases you are bringing so we can recommend the right vehicle.
  • Luggage tags: many cruise lines send luggage tags before sailing. Attach them before your chauffeur arrives so bags can go straight to the porters at the terminal.
  • Kerbside drop-off: your chauffeur unloads your bags at the drop-off area, where the terminal's luggage process takes over. Check with your cruise line about how bag drop works for your sailing.
  • Carry-on essentials: keep anything you need for the first few hours on board with you, as checked bags can take a while to reach your cabin.

You can see the luggage capacity of each vehicle in our fleet section. More on choosing between them is in families and groups below.

From the Gold Coast, Brisbane or Brisbane Airport

Where you start makes a big difference to how much time you need. These are approximate drive times in normal conditions; your chauffeur will confirm a pickup time based on the actual day.

From the Gold Coast

Plenty of Gold Coast residents and holidaymakers sail from Brisbane. The trip runs up the M1 Pacific Motorway, then onto the Gateway Motorway towards the airport and port. The M1 between the Gold Coast and Brisbane can be slow, especially on weekday mornings heading north, so we build in a generous buffer. The reverse of this route is covered in our guide to Brisbane Airport to Gold Coast transfers, which uses much the same roads.

From Brisbane and surrounds

From the CBD and inner suburbs, the terminal is a relatively short drive. Even so, weekday peak traffic on the approaches to the Gateway can add time. Your chauffeur collects you from home, your hotel or your office and takes you straight to the terminal drop-off.

From Brisbane Airport

Flying in to meet your ship? The terminal is close to the airport, so this is usually the shortest transfer of all. We track your flight details, meet you on arrival and take you directly to Luggage Point. See the next section for timing advice.

Combining a flight and a cruise

Because Luggage Point is so close to Brisbane Airport, many interstate and international travellers fly in on the day of their cruise. It can work well, but it comes with risk. Flights are delayed, bags take time to come off the carousel, and a ship will not wait for a late passenger.

If you are landing at Coolangatta instead, read our Gold Coast Airport transfer guide before deciding which airport suits your cruise. We recommend leaving a comfortable gap between your scheduled landing time and the end of your cruise check-in window. Many travellers choose to fly in the day before instead, which we cover in pre-cruise hotel stays. Others spend a few days on the coast first and travel up from Byron Bay on cruise day. If you do fly in on the day, a private transfer is the most direct way from the arrivals hall to the ship: no waiting for shared shuttles, no taxi queue, and your chauffeur already knows your flight status.

The same thinking applies at the end of your cruise. If you are flying home on disembarkation day, book a flight that leaves a generous margin for customs, luggage collection and the drive to the airport.

Disembarkation-day pickups and waiting

Getting off a ship is less predictable than getting on. Customs and border processing, luggage collection and the order in which decks are called all affect when you walk out of the terminal. Your cruise line will usually give you information about disembarkation times before the end of the voyage.

When you book a return pickup, tell us your ship and the expected disembarkation time. On the day, we stay in contact and plan around your actual exit, so you are not left standing at the kerb with a pile of suitcases. Book your return when you book your outbound trip and it is one less thing to think about on holiday.

Felix tip

Save our booking details on your phone before you sail. When you are back in mobile range on the way into port, you can easily check your pickup details.

Families, groups and accessibility

Cruises are often family or group occasions: milestone birthdays, anniversaries, or several generations travelling together. Getting everyone to the terminal at the same time, with all their luggage, is much easier in one vehicle.

  • Executive Mercedes V-Class: up to seven passengers with room for cruise luggage. The best choice for families and groups.
  • Executive Audi Sedan: up to three passengers with standard luggage. Ideal for couples or small parties travelling light.
  • Child seats: available on request. Let us know the ages of any children when you book.

Accessibility needs

If anyone in your party has limited mobility, uses a walking aid or needs extra time getting in and out of a vehicle, please tell us when you book. Door-to-door service means less walking and no car park to cross, and we can recommend the vehicle that suits your needs best. For passengers who use a wheelchair, contact us first to discuss whether our vehicles are suitable, and check with your cruise line about assistance at the terminal itself.

Pre-cruise hotel stays

Staying in Brisbane the night before you sail removes most of the risk from embarkation day. Some travellers choose a hotel near the airport for the shortest possible run to Luggage Point; others prefer the CBD so they can enjoy an evening in the city first.

Either way, we can collect you from your hotel on the morning of your cruise, timed to your check-in window. If you are arriving from interstate, we can also meet your flight the day before and take you to your hotel, then return for the terminal transfer. All of this can be arranged as separate bookings or as part of an hourly or as-directed service.

A pre-cruise night also gives you time to do something more relaxed. If you have a spare day, a Tamborine Mountain winery tour is an easy outing from Brisbane, and families with kids may prefer a day at the parks with our Gold Coast theme park transfers. You can also browse our theme park transfer options on the main site.

Returning to the Gold Coast or Byron Bay

At the end of the cruise, plenty of passengers are heading south rather than to the airport. We regularly drive from Luggage Point back to the Gold Coast and across the border into Northern NSW.

If you are going on to Byron Bay, remember that from October to April NSW is on daylight saving and Queensland is not, so Byron is an hour ahead. Our guide to the Brisbane to Byron Bay private transfer covers the route, scenic stops and timing in detail. If you would rather fly part of the way, our guide to Gold Coast Airport to Byron Bay transfers explains that shorter run.

You can see where else we travel in our destinations and service areas. When you are ready, request a quote for your cruise transfer, or book your return to Byron Bay directly. A quote is not a confirmed booking until it is accepted.

Questions about how bookings work are answered in our FAQ, and you can read what other passengers say in our reviews. Prefer your phone? Our apps keep your upcoming trips in one place. Whichever way you sail, a private transfer means the holiday starts the moment you close the car door.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Frequently asked questions

Where is the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal?

It is at Luggage Point in Pinkenba, near the mouth of the Brisbane River and close to Brisbane Airport. It is a different location from the older Portside Wharf at Hamilton, so check your cruise documents to confirm which terminal you are sailing from.

What time should I arrive at the cruise terminal?

Follow the check-in window on your cruise line's boarding documents. Cruise lines allocate arrival times, and we plan your pickup so you arrive within your window with a sensible buffer for traffic.

How long does it take to get to the cruise terminal from the Gold Coast?

From central Gold Coast areas such as Surfers Paradise, allow roughly 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes in normal traffic, and more at peak times. Your chauffeur will suggest a pickup time based on your check-in window.

Can you pick us up when the ship comes back in?

Yes. Disembarkation times vary with customs and luggage collection, so we plan the pickup around the information your cruise line provides and stay in contact on the day.

Can we book a transfer from Brisbane Airport straight to the ship?

Yes. We track your flight details and drive you from the airport to the terminal, which is a short trip. Leave plenty of time between your flight landing and your cruise check-in window in case of delays.
