Murwillumbah sits inland on the Tweed River, a country town in a broad green valley ringed by mountains, with the distinctive peak of Wollumbin, also known as Mount Warning, rising above it. It feels a long way from the airport. In fact it is one of the closer Northern Rivers towns to Brisbane, but the trip has its own character, especially if you are starting from a farm up the valley rather than the main street.

A different side of the Northern Rivers

Most of the Northern Rivers airport runs we do start on the coast: Kingscliff, Cabarita, Byron, Lennox Head. Murwillumbah is different. It is a working valley town, surrounded by cane fields, cattle country, small villages and rainforest-clad ranges. The region sits within the remains of an ancient volcano, and the mountains on every side make it one of the most striking landscapes in the area.

Visitors come for the scenery, the art, the walking country and the quiet. Locals live on acreage, in villages up the valley such as Uki, or in town itself. Our passengers include all of them: holidaymakers leaving a cabin in the hills, families heading off on a trip, and residents who simply prefer not to leave a car at the airport for a fortnight.

Because the town is inland, it also tends to be overlooked when people plan airport transport. Shuttles and coaches in the region mostly follow the coast, and a hire car means leaving it somewhere at the end. A private transfer simply starts at your door, wherever in the valley that is. You can see more of the places we travel in our destinations section and read passenger feedback in our reviews.

Route and distance

From Murwillumbah town, Brisbane Airport is roughly 125 to 135 km away. In clear conditions the drive typically takes about an hour and a half, sometimes a little longer. That makes it a shorter run than the coastal villages further south.

The route is straightforward. Your chauffeur leaves the valley and heads north-east to join the Pacific Highway near the Tweed, crosses the border into Queensland, and continues on the M1 Pacific Motorway through the Gold Coast and Logan. The last leg follows the Gateway Motorway, which has tolled sections, to the airport terminals.

  • From town: allow around 1 h 30 to 1 h 40 without traffic.
  • From villages up the valley: add the time it takes to reach Murwillumbah, which can be significant on winding roads.
  • From rural properties: add time for driveways, gates and unsealed sections at the start.
  • In peak traffic: the M1 between the Gold Coast and Brisbane is where most delays happen, so leave a buffer.

We explain how to set a pickup time around these variables in early flights and pickup times below.

Rural pickups: getting the details right

Rural pickups are where a little preparation saves the most time. Maps can be unreliable on country roads, property numbers can be hard to see, and mobile reception in parts of the valley can come and go. The best way to avoid a missed gate at dawn is to send clear information when you book.

Detail to sendWhy it helps
Full address and property nameRural numbering can be hard to spot; a name on the gate confirms the right place
Directions from the nearest main roadMap apps sometimes route through private or unsuitable tracks
Gate details and codesLets your chauffeur reach the house rather than waiting at the road
Driveway conditionsSteep, unsealed or narrow driveways are fine with warning; surprises cost time
Backup phone numberUseful where mobile reception is patchy, such as a landline or neighbour
Where to waitIf the house is hard to reach, a clear meeting point at the gate can be simpler
Felix tip

If you have hosted visitors before, you probably already have directions you send them. Paste those into your booking notes. They are usually better than anything a map can offer.

If your property is a long way up the valley, tell us roughly how long it takes you to reach town. It helps us set an accurate pickup time.

Early flights and pickup times

Many international and interstate flights from Brisbane leave early in the morning, which means a pickup in the valley well before sunrise. Country roads are a different proposition in the dark. They are often unlit, can be narrow and winding, and wildlife can be about at dawn and dusk. Fog can also settle in low parts of the valley on some mornings.

That is a good reason to let someone else drive. Your chauffeur takes the first stretch at a calm, sensible pace, then settles into the motorway once the valley is behind you. The rest of the trip, you can doze.

To set a pickup time:

  1. Start with your flight departure time in Queensland time.
  2. Subtract the time you want at the terminal, based on your airline's advice.
  3. Subtract the drive from your address, plus a buffer for traffic and any stop.
  4. Between October and April, add one hour to convert to the NSW time on your kitchen clock.

We track your flight details and confirm the pickup in local time, so you do not need to get the arithmetic right at 4 am.

The border clock in the Tweed Valley

Murwillumbah is only a short distance from the Queensland border, and many locals live their lives across both sides. That makes the time difference easy to forget. From early October to early April, NSW observes daylight saving and Queensland does not, so the valley is an hour ahead of Brisbane.

Good to know

Your flight time is set in Queensland time. Your pickup in Murwillumbah happens in NSW time. In summer, those are an hour apart. When we confirm your booking, we state the pickup in local time to keep it clear.

Arrivals work the same way in reverse. Land at Brisbane at 6 pm Queensland time in January and you will reach the valley at around 8.30 pm local time, not 7.30 pm, after the drive and a short buffer.

Coming home to the valley

The return trip is often the one people remember. After a long-haul flight, or even a full day of interstate travel, the last thing most travellers want is to collect a car from long-term parking and drive into the hills at night. The motorway is busy, the country roads at the end are dark, and everyone in the car is tired.

A private arrival transfer solves that neatly. Because we track your flight details, your pickup moves if the flight lands early or late. Your chauffeur meets you, loads the bags and drives the whole way to your gate. You can sleep through the Gold Coast and wake up as the car turns into the valley.

A few things worth sorting before you fly out:

  • Book the return when you book the departure, so it is settled before the trip begins.
  • Leave the gate code or access notes in the booking, even if they were used on the way out.
  • If someone at home will open the gate, add their number.
  • Let us know if you will want a quick stop on the way, for groceries or a meal, after time away.

Not leaving a vehicle at the airport also removes one more thing to think about while you are away. The same rural pickup details apply on the way home as on the way out.

Brisbane or Gold Coast Airport?

Gold Coast Airport at Coolangatta is much closer to Murwillumbah than Brisbane. If it serves your destination, it can be the easier option. Brisbane tends to offer a wider choice of routes, including international connections, which is why many valley residents still fly from there.

We drive to both. For the shorter run, see our guide to Gold Coast Airport to Kingscliff and the Tweed Coast, which explains the border airport and its clock. For a broader comparison of the two airports for the region, the original Gold Coast Airport to Byron Bay guide is a useful read.

Nearby towns and coastal neighbours

Many Tweed Valley visitors split their stay between the hills and the coast. If you are finishing your trip on the beach, our guides to Tweed Heads to Brisbane Airport, Kingscliff to Brisbane Airport and Casuarina and Cabarita Beach to Brisbane Airport cover those pickups.

Further south, Mullumbimby and Brunswick Heads share a similar mix of town and hinterland, and our guide to Byron Bay to Brisbane Airport covers the region's best-known town. Travellers coming the other way, perhaps to stay in the valley, can start with the original Brisbane to Byron Bay guide, which describes the drive south.

Vehicles and luggage

Choose the vehicle based on passengers and gear rather than distance. On a run of an hour and a half, both are comfortable.

  • Executive Mercedes V-Class: up to seven passengers with room for larger bags, walking gear and children's equipment.
  • Child seats: available on request. Tell us the ages of any children when you book.

Compare both in our fleet. If you are not sure which suits, get an instant quote and mention your group size and bags.
