Tweed Heads to Brisbane Airport Transfer: Two Airports, Two Clocks
Gold Coast Airport is just up the road, so why fly from Brisbane? Here is when BNE makes sense from Tweed Heads, and how to handle the clock change at the border.
On this page 10 sections
- Allow around 1 hour 20 to 25 minutes from Tweed Heads to Brisbane Airport in clear traffic, and more at peak times.
- Brisbane Airport is often worth the longer drive when it offers the flight, fare or connection that suits your trip better.
- From October to April your home clock in Tweed Heads runs an hour ahead of the Queensland time printed on a Brisbane boarding pass.
- Give us your flight number and we plan the pickup in your local time, so nobody has to do the border arithmetic at 4 am.
Living in Tweed Heads means living in two places at once. Walk a few streets and you are in Coolangatta, in another state, on another clock for half the year. Gold Coast Airport sits practically next door, yet plenty of Tweed residents and visitors still choose to fly from Brisbane. This guide explains when that longer trip is worth it, how the border clock catches people out, and how a private chauffeur takes the guesswork out of the drive north.
Twin towns, one border
Tweed Heads and Coolangatta grew up together around the mouth of the Tweed River. The border between New South Wales and Queensland runs through the middle, sometimes along a quiet suburban street. Locals cross it to shop, eat, work and swim without giving it a second thought.
For travel, though, the border matters in two practical ways. The first is that you have a genuine choice of airports within reasonable reach. The second is the clock, which we look at in the clock quirk below. Both affect when your chauffeur should arrive at the door.
Our service area covers the whole Tweed, from the river and Point Danger end of town through Tweed Heads South, Banora Point and Terranora, so wherever you live or stay, we collect from the kerb. You can see how far we travel in our service areas.
Gold Coast Airport next door, or Brisbane?
Let us be honest: for a lot of trips, the airport at Coolangatta is the sensible choice. It is minutes from Tweed Heads, and if it offers the flight you want at the time you want, there is little reason to drive further. We take passengers there regularly.
Brisbane Airport comes into its own in a different set of situations. It is a larger airport with a wider range of routes, and travellers often find it opens up options that a smaller airport cannot. Common reasons our Tweed passengers choose BNE include:
- Destination: the city or country you need is served from Brisbane but not, or not conveniently, from the Gold Coast.
- Departure time: a Brisbane flight leaves at a time that fits your day far better.
- Fares and loyalty: the price, cabin or airline program you prefer happens to suit a Brisbane departure.
- International connections: long-haul trips or onward connections that are simpler to start in Brisbane.
- Disruption: a cancelled or rescheduled flight leaves Brisbane as the best way to get away on the day.
We do not state which airlines fly where, because schedules change. Check the current options with the airlines before you book, then let us handle the ground transport to whichever airport wins.
When you compare the two airports, include the drive in the comparison. A Brisbane flight that leaves later in the morning can mean a more relaxed start than an earlier Gold Coast departure, even with the extra time on the road.
The clock quirk at the border
Here is the detail that trips up visitors and even the occasional local. Queensland does not use daylight saving. New South Wales does, from early October to early April. During those months, Tweed Heads is an hour ahead of Coolangatta, Brisbane and Brisbane Airport.
That means the flight time on your Brisbane boarding pass is in Queensland time, while the clock on your kitchen wall in Tweed Heads is in NSW time. Get the two mixed up and you either arrive an hour early or, far worse, an hour late.
A worked example
Imagine a summer departure from Brisbane printed as 9 am. In Tweed Heads, that is 10 am on your phone if it is set to local time. Working backwards from the Queensland time, the conversion goes like this:
- Start with the departure time on your booking, in Queensland time.
- Subtract the time you want to be at the terminal before departure, following your airline's guidance.
- Subtract the drive, allowing around 1 hour 20 to 25 minutes plus a sensible traffic buffer.
- Add one hour to convert that Queensland pickup time into NSW time at your door between October and April.
In winter, step four disappears, because both sides of the border run on the same time. It sounds simple written down. At 4 am, half awake, it is easy to forget.
Phones near the border sometimes pick up a network signal from the other side and show the other state's time. If you rely on your phone alarm, check its time zone setting rather than trusting automatic updates.

Planning your pickup time
When you book with us, you give us your flight number and departure time. We do the conversion and confirm the pickup in your local time, so the only thing you need to do is be ready at the door. This table shows how we think about the main variables. It is a planning guide, not a promise of exact timing.
| Factor | October to April | April to October |
|---|---|---|
| Tweed Heads vs Brisbane clock | Tweed Heads an hour ahead | Same time |
| Typical drive, clear roads | About 1 hr 20-25 min | About 1 hr 20-25 min |
| Busier periods to watch | Summer holidays, Friday afternoons | Winter school holidays, weekday peaks |
| Who converts the time? | We do, from your flight details | We do, from your flight details |
Summer is the season with the most room for confusion and, usually, the most holiday traffic. Those two factors together are why we prefer a generous buffer on summer departures.
The drive north: border to terminal
From most of Tweed Heads, your chauffeur is on the M1 Pacific Motorway within a few minutes. The route runs north past the Gold Coast Airport turn-off, then up the length of the Gold Coast, through the Logan area and onto the Gateway Motorway, which has tolled sections, for the final run to the terminals.
In clear traffic, allow around 1 hour 20 to 25 minutes for the roughly 110 to 115 km. The predictable slow points are the northern Gold Coast interchanges and the stretch towards Logan in weekday peaks. We look at conditions before departure and adjust where it makes sense.
If you are curious about the same corridor from a Queensland starting point, our guide to Coolangatta to Brisbane Airport transfers covers your neighbours across the border, and Gold Coast to Brisbane Airport covers the wider coast. Who books this transfer
The Tweed Heads to Brisbane run attracts a mix of travellers, and each has slightly different needs.
Residents on regular trips
Business travellers and frequent flyers who live in Tweed Heads, Banora Point or Terranora often book the same transfer again and again. The Executive Audi Sedan suits one to three passengers with standard luggage, and a quiet cabin is a good place to clear emails before a flight.
Visitors heading home
Holidaymakers staying near the river or the beaches sometimes fly in to the Gold Coast and out of Brisbane, or the other way around. That is perfectly workable. If you arrived through Coolangatta, our guide to Gold Coast Airport to Kingscliff and the Tweed Coast shows how the short arrival leg works.
Families and groups
For families with children, or friends travelling together, the Executive Mercedes V-Class seats up to seven with room for the luggage that comes with a longer trip. Child seats are available on request; just tell us the children's ages. Compare both cars in our fleet.
Coming home from Brisbane
The return trip is the one people forget to plan until they are standing in the arrivals hall. Booking it at the same time as your departure means you land knowing someone is waiting. We track your flight details, so if you arrive early or late, the pickup moves with you.
The clock works in reverse on the way home. Land in Brisbane at 7 pm Queensland time in summer and, once you have collected your bags and driven home, the clock in your Tweed Heads kitchen could well be showing close to 10 pm. The hour you lost on the way out comes back to bite on the way in. It is worth telling anyone expecting you, and worth remembering if you have arranged a late dinner or a babysitter.
As with departures, we work from your flight number rather than a fixed clock time, which is why tracking matters. Long-haul arrivals in particular can shift, and immigration and baggage queues vary. Your chauffeur adjusts, and you do not have to send a message from the carousel. The same planning principles from planning your pickup time apply in this direction too.
If your trip continues further south, the same planning applies. Our guides to Brisbane Airport to Byron Bay and the original Brisbane to Byron Bay private transfer explain the longer run down the Pacific Highway.
Departure and return sorted in one go, with flight tracking on arrival.
Extra stops and special trips
A private transfer runs on your schedule, so small extras are easy. Collecting a colleague in Coolangatta, a quick stop on the Gold Coast or dropping a pet with family on the way are all common requests. Tell us in advance so the plan and the quote reflect what you need.
Some Tweed passengers combine an airport trip with something else entirely: a cruise departure, for example. Our guide to Brisbane cruise terminal transfers covers the terminal at Luggage Point, close to the airport. Others are meeting visiting family at BNE and taking them straight to the Gold Coast first; our Brisbane Airport to Gold Coast guide covers that leg. Neighbours a little further down the coast can read our Kingscliff to Brisbane Airport guide, and anyone in the valley should see Murwillumbah to Brisbane Airport. You can browse the full range of chauffeur services on our main site.
Booking your Tweed Heads airport transfer
Booking takes a few minutes online. Enter your Tweed Heads address, your flight number and departure time, the number of passengers and any child seat or stop requests. You can book your transfer straight away, or get an instant quote first if you would like to see the cost. A quote is not a confirmed booking until it is accepted.
If you travel often, our apps make repeat bookings simple, and our FAQ answers common questions about payment and changes. You can also read what other passengers say in our reviews.
Two airports and two clocks are part of life in Tweed Heads. With a chauffeur who knows both, the drive to Brisbane becomes the easy part of the trip.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get from Tweed Heads to Brisbane Airport?
In clear conditions the drive is typically around 1 hour 20 to 25 minutes, covering roughly 110 to 115 km. Weekday peaks on the M1 and holiday traffic can add time, so we build in a buffer when we plan your pickup.
Why would I fly from Brisbane when Gold Coast Airport is so close?
Gold Coast Airport is the obvious choice for many trips, and we are happy to take you there. Brisbane Airport can make more sense when it has the destination, departure time, fare or international connection that works better for you. Compare both before you book flights.
My flight time is in Queensland time. What time will you collect me?
From October to April, Tweed Heads runs an hour ahead of Brisbane. If you share your flight number and departure time, we confirm the pickup in the local time at your door, so the conversion is handled for you.
Can you pick me up in Coolangatta and then Tweed Heads?
Yes. A short extra stop in the twin towns is easy to arrange, whether you are collecting a friend across the border or dropping a key on the way out. Mention it when you book so the timing and quote reflect it.
Do you also collect passengers from Brisbane Airport and drive them home to Tweed Heads?
Yes. We track your flight details, adjust to an early or late landing and drive you home door to door. Many passengers book both directions together.
