- From Gold Coast Airport, Kingscliff is typically only 15 to 20 minutes away, and the furthest Tweed Coast villages around half an hour.
- The airport sits on the state border, so in daylight saving months your phone and your flight times can disagree by an hour.
- For Tweed Coast stays, flying into Coolangatta can save well over an hour of driving each way compared with Brisbane.
- Short transfers still benefit from flight tracking, a meet at arrivals and the right vehicle for boards, prams and holiday luggage.
Some airport transfers are about endurance. This one is about convenience. Land at Gold Coast Airport at Coolangatta and the Tweed Coast is almost on the doorstep: Kingscliff is typically a quarter of an hour away, and even Pottsville is only around half an hour. The drive is short, but a few details, especially the border clock, are worth getting right.
The short hop across the border
Gold Coast Airport sits right on the Queensland and New South Wales border. Its runway effectively straddles the two states, and the Tweed Coast begins almost as soon as you leave the terminal precinct. For travellers staying in Kingscliff, Casuarina, Cabarita Beach or Pottsville, it is one of the most convenient airport arrivals on the east coast.
The route is simple. Your chauffeur heads south from the terminal onto the Pacific Highway, then either stays on the highway or turns onto the Tweed Coast Road, depending on which village you are visiting. Either way, you will be at your door before most people at a shuttle desk have found their seats.
It is also a gentle introduction to the region. Within a few minutes the terminal buildings give way to the Tweed River, sugar cane country and glimpses of the ocean, and the pace of the place changes almost at once. You can see the other parts of the coast we cover in our destinations section.
Because the trip is short, we often get asked whether a private transfer is worth it. We cover that honestly in is a private transfer worth it below.
Village by village: how far and how long
The Tweed Coast runs south from the Tweed River in a string of small beach villages. Each has a slightly different feel, and each is a little further from the airport than the last. The table below gives approximate distances and drive times from Gold Coast Airport, with the run from Brisbane Airport shown for comparison. All times assume clear conditions.
| Destination | From Gold Coast Airport (approx.) | From Brisbane Airport, for comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Kingscliff | 15–20 km, about 15–20 min | 125–135 km, about 1 h 30–1 h 35 |
| Casuarina | Roughly 25–30 km, about 20–25 min | 135–145 km, about 1 h 35–1 h 45 |
| Cabarita Beach | Roughly 25–30 km, about 25 min | 135–145 km, about 1 h 35–1 h 45 |
| Pottsville and Hastings Point | Roughly 35–40 km, about 30–35 min | 145–150 km, about 1 h 45 |
Kingscliff
The largest of the Tweed Coast villages, with a beachfront strip of cafes, a creek and a mix of apartments, resorts and family homes. It is the quickest of the coastal arrivals.
Casuarina
A newer coastal community south of Kingscliff, with holiday homes and resort-style accommodation close to a long, quiet beach. Some streets are newer than older map data, so a precise address helps.
Cabarita Beach
A small headland village with a relaxed surf-town feel. Accommodation ranges from beach houses to boutique stays, many of them a short walk from the sand.
Pottsville and Hastings Point
The quietest end of the coast, around creeks and estuaries, popular with families and long-stay holidaymakers. Still typically only about half an hour from the airport.
If your stay starts further south, our guides to Gold Coast Airport to Byron Bay and Gold Coast to Byron Bay cover the longer coastal run.
The border clock: why your phone may disagree
This is the single most common point of confusion on Tweed Coast arrivals. Queensland does not observe daylight saving. New South Wales does, from early October to early April. Gold Coast Airport is on the border, and flight times there are generally shown in Queensland time.
So between October and April, you might land at 2 pm on your boarding pass, step out of the terminal at 2.30 pm, and arrive at your Kingscliff accommodation fifteen minutes later at around 3.45 pm local time. Your hotel's 3 pm check-in has already passed, even though it felt like you were early.
Phones near the border can sometimes switch between time zones depending on which network tower they pick up. If your phone suddenly jumps an hour on arrival, that is probably why. Rely on the times confirmed in your booking rather than the clock on your screen.
For departures, it matters even more. If your flight home leaves at 10 am Queensland time, your Kingscliff pickup will be confirmed in NSW time, which in summer is an hour later on the clock. Plan your morning from the confirmed pickup time, not from the flight time.
Met on arrival and at your Tweed Coast door in minutes.
When flying into Gold Coast beats Brisbane
Many Tweed Coast visitors default to Brisbane because it is the bigger airport. Sometimes that is the right call, but for this part of the coast, Coolangatta often wins. Compare the columns in the village by village table: the difference can be well over an hour each way.
Gold Coast Airport usually makes more sense when:
- A suitable domestic flight is available on your travel dates.
- You are travelling with young children, who are happier with a 20-minute drive than a 90-minute one.
- You are arriving late in the evening and want to be in bed rather than on the M1.
- You are on a short break, where every hour of holiday counts.
Brisbane may suit better when:
- You need an international connection or a route that does not serve the Gold Coast.
- The flight times or fares into Brisbane suit your plans better.
- You are combining the trip with time in Brisbane or the northern Gold Coast.
If Brisbane is your airport, our guides to Kingscliff to Brisbane Airport, Casuarina and Cabarita Beach to Brisbane Airport and Pottsville and Hastings Point to Brisbane Airport cover each run in detail, and the original Brisbane Airport to Gold Coast guide explains the Brisbane arrival process. Our Northern Rivers to Brisbane Airport guide compares every airport choice across the region.
Making the most of the first afternoon
One of the quiet advantages of a short airport transfer is time. Instead of losing most of the afternoon on the motorway, you may arrive on the Tweed Coast with hours of daylight left. A little planning turns that into a proper first day of the holiday.
Arriving before check-in
If your flight lands well before your accommodation's check-in time, remember to count in NSW time during summer. You may find the gap is shorter than you thought. If it is still early, ask your accommodation whether you can leave bags, then head to the beach or a cafe.
A stop for supplies
Many Tweed Coast stays are self-contained holiday homes and apartments. A short stop for groceries on the way can save an extra trip later, especially with children or no car of your own. Stops on request are part of a private transfer; mention it when you book so the timing and quote reflect it.
Late arrivals
Evening flights are common, and the villages can be very quiet after dark. Have your key collection or check-in instructions ready, include any lockbox or gate codes in the booking, and your chauffeur will wait while you get the door open if needed.
Whatever time you land, the border clock section above is worth a second read before you plan the first evening. Dinner bookings in Kingscliff or Cabarita are, of course, in local NSW time.
How the arrival works
A short transfer only works well if the pickup is smooth, because a long wait at the kerb can take longer than the drive itself. Here is what happens.
- We track your flight. If it lands early or late, your pickup time moves with it.
- Your chauffeur meets you. We confirm the meeting arrangements with your booking.
- Bags go in the car. Your chauffeur loads the luggage, boards and prams.
- Straight to your door. No shared stops, no detours, and help unloading on arrival.
On a short arrival, the biggest time saver is a precise destination address with any gate codes or check-in instructions. Add them to your booking and your chauffeur can go straight to the right building without phone calls.
Is a private transfer worth it for a short trip?
It is a fair question for a drive of under half an hour. Taxis and rideshares do operate in the area, and some travellers are happy to queue. The difference with a private transfer is certainty: the car is booked, your flight is tracked, and someone is waiting for you rather than you waiting for them.
It tends to matter most for:
- Families with child seats, which we fit on request before pickup.
- Groups of up to seven, who would otherwise need two cars.
- Travellers with surfboards, golf clubs or a lot of luggage.
- Late-night arrivals, when options at the kerb can be thinner.
- Anyone who simply wants the holiday to start the moment they land.
The Executive Audi Sedan suits up to three passengers; the Executive Mercedes V-Class takes up to seven with room for holiday gear. Compare them in our fleet.
Heading home from the Tweed Coast
The departure run is just as short, which makes it easy to cut too fine. Remember the clock: your pickup is in NSW time, your flight in Queensland time. In summer, leaving your Kingscliff apartment at 9 am NSW time puts you at the airport at around 8.15 am Queensland time.
If you are flying out of Brisbane instead, allow for a much longer drive. Our guide to Tweed Heads to Brisbane Airport covers the northern end of the coast, and Coolangatta to Brisbane Airport covers the Queensland side of the border. For Byron-bound travellers leaving via the border airport, see Byron Bay to Gold Coast Airport.

Booking your Tweed Coast transfer
Book online with your flight details, destination address, passenger numbers, luggage and any child seat requests. If you want to see the cost first, get an instant quote; a quote is not a confirmed booking until it is accepted. Many travellers book the arrival and departure together so the whole trip is settled.
See our full range of chauffeur services, our cross-border service areas and our FAQ for common questions. If your holiday includes a big day out, our Gold Coast theme park transfers are only a little further up the coast.
A short trip deserves a smooth start. Land, meet your chauffeur, and be on the Tweed Coast before the holiday has had time to feel like travel.
