KEY TAKEAWAYS
  • From Surfers Paradise or Broadbeach, allow around 1 hour 05 to 1 hour 15 minutes to Brisbane Airport without traffic, plus a buffer for peaks.
  • In high-rise buildings, the lift ride, the lobby and the right entrance can take longer than you expect, so build them into the pickup time.
  • Tell us exactly where to meet: the porte-cochère, a side street or the lobby, not just the building's postal address.
  • Families with prams, child seats and holiday luggage are usually best suited to the Mercedes van.

Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach are where the Gold Coast goes vertical: tall hotels, apartment towers, busy streets and a light rail line running through the middle. Getting from here to Brisbane Airport is a simple motorway drive. Getting from your room to the car, with the whole family and a week of luggage, is where departure mornings are won or lost. This guide focuses on that first stretch, then covers the drive itself.

Why high-rise pickups are different

A pickup from a house is easy: the car pulls into the driveway and the bags go straight in. A pickup from the thirty-somethingth floor of a beachfront tower involves a lift, a lobby, possibly a security door, and a street where stopping is not always straightforward.

None of this is difficult, but each step takes a few minutes, and they add up. At busy times, especially on checkout mornings, lifts in large buildings can be slow, and lobbies fill with other guests doing exactly the same thing. That is why the pickup time we suggest includes more than just the drive. See timing the drive for how it all fits together.

Before you come down: a departure checklist

A calm departure from a tall building starts upstairs. This is the order that tends to work best:

  1. The night before: pack, weigh bags if you are near the airline's limit, and check out if your hotel or apartment manager allows it.
  2. Confirm the meeting point: know which entrance you will use and tell us in the booking notes.
  3. Keys and access cards: find out where to leave them, especially in self-managed apartments with key drop boxes.
  4. Start moving early: head for the lift a few minutes before the pickup time, especially with several bags or a pram.
  5. Final sweep: balcony, bathroom, chargers and the hotel safe are where things are usually forgotten.
Felix tip

If you have a lot of luggage, send one adult down with the first load while the rest of the group finishes up. Your chauffeur can start loading, and nobody has to wait for a second lift with a toddler and three suitcases.

Hotels, apartments and meeting points

The two main types of accommodation in Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach work slightly differently.

Hotels with a driveway

Many larger hotels have a porte-cochère or covered driveway at the front. These are ideal: your chauffeur pulls in, porters may help bring bags out, and you step straight into the car under cover. Tell us the hotel name and your booking name, and we will meet you there.

Apartment buildings

Holiday apartments and residential towers vary much more. Some have a set-down bay at the front, some have a loading zone on a side street, and some front directly onto a busy road where stopping is limited. A few have basement car parks with low clearance, which may not suit a larger vehicle such as a van.

In each case, the most useful thing you can give us is clear directions:

  • The building name, not just the street number.
  • Which street the main entrance faces.
  • Any set-down bay, driveway or side entrance you know of.
  • A mobile number that will be answered on the morning.
Good to know

Some buildings in this area have similar names, and some have entrances on two different streets. If you are unsure, take a photo of the entrance the day before and describe it in the booking notes. It removes any guesswork for your chauffeur.

Busy streets, light rail and one-way loops

The streets of Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach are busy at most times of day, and the layout has a few quirks. The light rail runs along the main corridor, which limits where cars can turn and stop. Cavill Avenue is a pedestrian mall in its central section. Several side streets are one-way, and the beachfront Esplanade can be slow when visitors are out and about.

Your chauffeur knows the area and will choose the most practical approach to your building. What helps most is not being surprised: if the car has to stop around the corner from your entrance because of road rules, a quick phone call sorts it out. Keep your phone handy for the last few minutes before pickup.

In Broadbeach, the convention and entertainment precinct can be particularly busy on event days, with extra traffic and closures near the venues. If your departure clashes with a big event, mention it and we will plan a little more time.

Luggage, prams and choosing a vehicle

Coastal holidays generate luggage. Beach gear, shopping from around the coast, toys, prams, portable cots and the occasional surfboard all need to fit in the car. Choosing the right vehicle at booking is the easiest way to avoid a squeeze at the kerb.

Travelling asSuggested vehicleThings to tell us

If in doubt, choose the van. It is far easier to have spare space than to discover the last suitcase does not fit. You can compare both vehicles in our fleet section.

Travelling with children

Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach are popular with families, and the trip to the airport is often the most stressful part of the holiday for parents. A private transfer removes several of the usual headaches: no car seats to wrestle into a rental, no hire car to return and no long walk from a car park with tired children.

  • Child seats: available on request. Tell us the number of children and their ages when you book, so the right seats are fitted before pickup.
  • Prams: fold them before your chauffeur arrives if you can, and mention the type when you book.
  • Snacks and entertainment: an hour or so in the car is easier with something to eat and something to watch or play.
  • A spare change of clothes: in the carry-on, not the checked bag, for long-haul flights especially.

If the holiday included a day at the theme parks, you will already know how much children's gear can accumulate. Our guide to Gold Coast theme park transfers covers those days out.

Timing the drive to Brisbane Airport

From Surfers Paradise or Broadbeach, your chauffeur heads inland to the M1 Pacific Motorway, then north through Logan to the Gateway Motorway, which has tolled sections, and on to the airport. The distance is around 80 to 95 km, and in clear conditions the drive typically takes about 1 hour 05 to 1 hour 15 minutes.

To work out a pickup time, start with your airline's advice on when to arrive at the terminal, then add the drive, a traffic buffer and a few minutes for the building departure. Weekday mornings, late afternoons, Sunday afternoons and the end of school holidays usually need the biggest buffers.

Brisbane Airport has separate domestic and international terminals. Include your flight number when you book so your chauffeur takes you to the right one. For more on domestic versus international timing and early flights, see our main guide to Gold Coast to Brisbane Airport transfers.

When your flight leaves late in the day

An evening flight sounds relaxed, but it often leaves a gap between checkout and pickup. Many hotels and apartments have a morning checkout time, and the flight may not leave until after dark. That gap is easy to fill well with a little planning.

  • Ask about late checkout or luggage storage. Many hotels will hold bags at reception after checkout. Check with your accommodation, because policies vary.
  • Plan a final lunch nearby, so you are close to the building when the car arrives.
  • Consider an hourly booking if you would like one last outing on the way, such as a beach stop or a short detour, before heading to the airport.
  • Watch the clock on weekdays. A late-afternoon pickup runs into the evening peak on the M1 and Gateway, so it needs a bigger buffer than a midday one.

If bags are being held at reception, tell us so your chauffeur knows to come into the lobby or meet you at the front desk. For flights very late at night, the roads are usually quieter, but the same principle applies: confirm the meeting point, keep your phone charged and allow a sensible margin. Early and late flights are available by arrangement, so book in advance rather than on the day.

Staying somewhere else on the coast?

If you are not in the central high-rise strip, the trip changes. Northern resorts are closer to Brisbane, and our Sanctuary Cove and Hope Island guide covers that shorter run. From the southern beaches, the Coolangatta to Brisbane Airport guide looks at the longer drive and when Gold Coast Airport may suit you better.

Heading into the city rather than the airport? See Gold Coast to Brisbane City. Leaving on a cruise? Our Brisbane cruise terminal transfers guide explains how those pickups work. And if you are carrying on south rather than flying home, see Gold Coast to Byron Bay or Gold Coast to Noosa.

Arriving back, and booking your transfer

Coming back to Surfers Paradise or Broadbeach next time? We track your flight details on arrival, meet you at Brisbane Airport and drive you to the right entrance of your building. Our Brisbane Airport to Gold Coast transfers guide covers how that works.

To book your transfer, enter your building name and address, the meeting point, your flight details, passenger numbers, luggage and any child seat requests. You can also get an instant quote first; a quote is not a confirmed booking until the booking form is completed and accepted.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take from Surfers Paradise to Brisbane Airport?

From Surfers Paradise or Broadbeach, the drive is typically around 1 hour 05 to 1 hour 15 minutes without traffic, covering roughly 80 to 95 km. Weekday peaks and school holiday traffic can add time, so we plan pickups with a buffer.

Where will the chauffeur meet me at my apartment building?

Wherever is safest and most practical for that building, usually the main entrance, driveway or set-down area. Tell us the building name, the street the entrance faces and any preferred meeting point when you book.

Can the chauffeur help with our luggage?

Yes. Your chauffeur will help load bags at the kerb and unload them at the terminal. For large amounts of luggage, choose the Mercedes van and tell us roughly how many bags you have.

Do you provide child seats?

Yes, child seats are available on request. Let us know the number and ages of the children when you book so the right seats are fitted before pickup.

Should I book the Audi or the Mercedes van?

The Audi sedan suits up to three passengers with standard luggage. For families, groups of up to seven, or anyone with prams, golf bags or lots of suitcases, the Mercedes V-Class is the more comfortable choice.
