- Brisbane Airport is typically about 1 h 20 min from Tweed Heads and up to around 2 h 25 min from Ballina in clear conditions.
- Gold Coast Airport and Ballina Byron Gateway Airport are much closer to most towns, but Brisbane offers the widest choice of routes.
- From early October to early April, Northern Rivers towns are an hour ahead of Brisbane, so every pickup needs converting from the flight time.
- Set a pickup by working back from the flight in Queensland time, then convert to NSW time and add a buffer for M1 traffic.
The Northern Rivers stretches from the Tweed River down past Byron Bay to Ballina, a region of beach villages, hinterland towns and green valleys just across the border from Queensland. For international travel and the widest choice of flights, many people who live or holiday here use Brisbane Airport. This guide brings the whole region together: how far each town is, how to choose an airport, and how to plan around the summer time difference.
How to use this guide
We have written individual guides for most Northern Rivers towns, each with local detail on pickups, timing and the trip. This page is the overview. Start with the comparison table to see where your town sits, then read the sections on choosing an airport and daylight saving, which apply to everyone in the region.
All distances and times in this guide are approximate. They assume clear conditions and no stops, measured to Brisbane Airport. Your actual journey depends on your exact address, the time of day and traffic on the M1.
Every town compared
The table runs roughly north to south, from the towns closest to the border to those furthest away. Each row links to the full guide for that pickup.

Every route shares the same northern half: the M1 Pacific Motorway through the Gold Coast and Logan, then the Gateway Motorway, with tolled sections, to the terminals. The differences are all at the southern end, in how far you travel on the Pacific Highway or the Tweed Coast Road before reaching the border.
Three parts of the region
It helps to think of the Northern Rivers as three broad areas, each with its own character and its own airport logic.
The Tweed: coast and valley
Tweed Heads sits right on the border, with the Tweed Coast villages of Kingscliff, Casuarina, Cabarita Beach, Pottsville and Hastings Point running south along the beach. Inland, Murwillumbah and the Tweed Valley sit beneath the mountains. This is the closest part of the region to Brisbane, at roughly an hour and a half for most addresses. It is also very close to Gold Coast Airport; our guide to Gold Coast Airport to Kingscliff and the Tweed Coast covers that shorter run.
Byron Shire: beaches and hinterland
Further south are Ocean Shores, New Brighton, Brunswick Heads, Mullumbimby, Byron Bay and Bangalow. Expect around two hours to Brisbane Airport. Many pickups here are from holiday homes, hinterland properties and wedding weekends, where access notes matter as much as the drive. For city rather than airport trips, see Byron Bay to Brisbane; for arrivals, see Brisbane Airport to Byron Bay and the original Brisbane to Byron Bay guide.
Ballina and Lennox Head
At the southern end of our regular runs, Ballina and Lennox Head are typically two and a quarter hours or more from Brisbane Airport. They also sit close to Ballina Byron Gateway Airport. Family visits and holiday stays are common here; our Brisbane to Ballina private transfer guide covers trips from the city.

Choosing between Brisbane, Gold Coast and Ballina
The Northern Rivers is unusual in having three airports within reach. The right one depends on your flight first and the drive second. We will not tell you which airlines fly where, as that changes, but here is how the choice usually works.
Brisbane Airport
The furthest from the region, but typically the widest choice of domestic routes and the main international gateway. Worth the longer drive if you need a particular connection, a particular departure time or an international flight.
Gold Coast Airport (Coolangatta)
Right on the border, and very close to the Tweed. Byron Bay is typically around 50 to 60 minutes away, and Kingscliff around 15 to 20 minutes. If a suitable flight is available, it can save more than an hour each way. See Byron Bay to Gold Coast Airport and the original Gold Coast Airport to Byron Bay guide.
Ballina Byron Gateway Airport
The closest airport for Ballina, Lennox Head and much of Byron Shire. A smaller airport with a more limited choice of routes, but very convenient when it suits your trip.
- Choose Brisbane for international travel, wider route choice or specific timings.
- Choose Gold Coast for the Tweed and northern Byron Shire when a domestic flight suits.
- Choose Ballina for the southern end of the region when its routes match your plans.
- Mix and match if it helps: many travellers land at one airport and leave from another.
We drive to and from all three. For travellers based on the Gold Coast heading south rather than flying, our Gold Coast to Byron Bay private transfer covers the coastal run.
Planning around daylight saving
This is the detail that trips up the most Northern Rivers travellers. Queensland does not observe daylight saving. New South Wales does, from early October to early April. For those months, every town in this guide is an hour ahead of Brisbane Airport.
Two worked examples make it clear:
- Departing in January from Byron Bay. Your flight leaves Brisbane at 1 pm Queensland time, and you want to be at the terminal two hours before. That means arriving at 11 am Queensland time. Allow around 2 h 10 min plus a buffer, and you leave at about 8.30 am Queensland time, which is 9.30 am on the clock in Byron.
- Arriving in December to Kingscliff. You land at 5 pm Queensland time and clear the terminal by about 5.30 pm. Around an hour and a half later, it is 7 pm Queensland time, which is 8 pm in Kingscliff. Plan dinner and check-in accordingly.
Flights from Brisbane are always shown in Queensland time. Pickups in the Northern Rivers happen in NSW time. We confirm every pickup in local time, and we recommend double-checking any booking made around the changeover weekends in early October and early April, when the clocks change in NSW but not in Queensland.
From April to October, both sides of the border share the same time, and none of this applies.
Setting a pickup time
Every Northern Rivers airport pickup can be worked out the same way. We do this for you when you book, but it helps to understand the logic.
- Start with your flight departure time, in Queensland time.
- Subtract the time you want at the terminal, following your airline's guidance.
- Subtract the typical drive for your town from the comparison table.
- Subtract a buffer for traffic, extra for Friday afternoons, school holidays and weekday peaks on the M1.
- Subtract time for any planned stop or extra pickup.
- Between October and April, add one hour to convert to NSW time.
For rural and hinterland addresses, add the time it takes you to reach the nearest main road. Locals know it better than any map, and including it in your booking notes gives a far more accurate pickup time.
Traffic and the roads you will use
South of the border, the Pacific Highway is a well-built, mostly divided road, and traffic is usually steady. The Tweed Coast Road serves the beach villages and is slower but scenic. The unpredictable part of every run is the M1 between the Gold Coast and Brisbane, where peak hours, school holidays and roadworks can add meaningful time.
The Gateway Motorway into the airport has tolled sections, which your chauffeur handles. Weekday mornings heading north tend to be busiest close to Brisbane, so early international departures are worth leaving a generous margin for.
Pickups, access and arrivals
Northern Rivers addresses vary more than most. A pickup might be a Kingscliff apartment with an intercom, a Byron holiday home on a busy street, or a hinterland property at the end of a long unsealed driveway. The drive times in this guide assume you are ready at the kerb of a town address; anything beyond that is worth telling us about.
When you book, include:
- The full address, unit number or property name.
- Gate codes, intercom details or the best entrance for a complex.
- Directions from the nearest main road for rural properties.
- A backup phone number where mobile reception is patchy, as it can be in parts of the hinterland and valleys.
Arrivals work in reverse. We track your flight details, so if you land early or late at Brisbane, your pickup moves with you. After a long flight, the drive south is the point at which most travellers are glad not to be behind the wheel, especially on dark country roads at the end. Booking the arrival and departure together means the whole trip is planned around both flights, and the daylight saving conversion is handled for each one.
Wedding parties, retreat groups and families spread across several towns can be handled with shared runs or staggered pickups. Tell us everyone's addresses and flight times, and we will suggest a sensible plan.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get from the Northern Rivers to Brisbane Airport?
It depends on the town. Tweed Heads is typically around 1 h 20 to 1 h 25 in clear conditions, Byron Bay around 2 h to 2 h 10, and Ballina around 2 h 15 to 2 h 25. Traffic on the M1 can add time, so we always build in a buffer.
Should I fly from Brisbane, Gold Coast or Ballina?
Gold Coast Airport and Ballina Byron Gateway Airport are closer to most Northern Rivers towns, which means a shorter transfer. Brisbane typically offers a wider choice of routes, including international connections. Choose based on your flight first, then the drive.
How does daylight saving affect my pickup time?
From early October to early April, NSW is an hour ahead of Queensland. Your Brisbane flight time is in Queensland time, while your pickup happens in NSW time. We confirm every pickup in local time so there is no confusion.
Can you pick up from rural properties and hinterland villages?
Yes. We collect from towns, villages and rural properties across the region. Send the full address, gate codes and access notes when you book, plus a backup phone number if reception is patchy.
Which vehicle should I book?
The Executive Audi Sedan suits up to three passengers with standard luggage. The Executive Mercedes V-Class seats up to seven with room for boards, prams and extra bags, which makes it the usual choice for families and groups on longer runs.
