- Frequently asked questions
- Ballina Byron Gateway Airport is minutes from town and ideal when it offers a direct flight to where you are going at a time that suits you.
- Brisbane Airport is around two and a quarter hours away but generally offers far more flights, destinations and international connections.
- For international travel, driving to Brisbane can remove a connecting flight, which reduces the risk of a missed connection.
- From October to April, Brisbane flight times are an hour behind Ballina clocks, so plan your pickup in NSW time.
If you live in or visit Ballina, you have an airport on your doorstep. So why would anyone drive more than two hours to Brisbane? Because, for some trips, it is genuinely the better option. This guide offers an honest comparison between Ballina Byron Gateway Airport and Brisbane Airport, with no airline names and no hard sell, and then explains how the drive north works when Brisbane is the right call.
The real question: which airport?
Ballina Byron Gateway Airport sits a short drive from Ballina town. It is a smaller regional airport with a more limited choice of domestic routes and flight times. Brisbane Airport is around 200 to 210 km to the north, typically about two hours and fifteen to two hours and twenty-five minutes on a clear road, and it generally offers a far wider range of domestic and international flights.
Neither is better in every case. The right airport depends on three things: where you are going, when you need to travel, and how much a connecting flight matters to you. We look at each below, then put them side by side in the comparison table.
A simple way to decide
- Search Ballina first. Look for a direct flight to your destination on your dates.
- Check the times. If a direct flight exists at a time that works, Ballina is usually the easy choice.
- Count the legs. If Ballina means two flights and Brisbane means one, weigh the connection risk against the drive.
- Consider the return. A late-night arrival back at Brisbane with a two-hour drive home may change the picture, though a chauffeur takes the strain out of that drive.
If you are still undecided, the reasons Brisbane is worth the drive usually settle it one way or the other.
When Ballina is the better choice
There is a lot to be said for an airport you can reach in minutes. For many trips, Ballina is the obvious answer.
- A direct flight exists: if Ballina flies direct to your destination, the time saved on the ground is hard to beat.
- The timing suits you: fewer daily services means less flexibility, but if one fits your plans, there is no reason to drive further.
- Short trips: for a quick domestic visit, a two-hour drive each way can outweigh the benefit of more flight options.
- Small children or tired travellers: the less time on the road, the better, as long as the flight works.
- Simple luggage: a smaller airport is generally quick to move through on a straightforward trip.
Check flight options, aircraft and baggage allowances directly with your airline, as regional services can differ from those at larger airports.
When Brisbane is worth the drive
Brisbane earns its place in a different set of situations.
- International travel: Brisbane has an international terminal. From Ballina you would generally need a connecting domestic flight first.
- Destinations Ballina does not serve directly: Brisbane's wider network often means a single flight instead of two.
- Timing: more daily departures can mean a flight at the time you actually want, rather than the only one available.
- Disruption options: if a flight is cancelled, a larger airport generally has more alternatives on the same day.
- Group travel: larger groups may find more seat availability across a wider range of flights.
The connection question
For international trips this is the deciding factor for many travellers. Flying from Ballina usually means a domestic leg to a larger hub, then the international flight. If the first leg is delayed, the connection is at risk. Driving to Brisbane removes that leg entirely. The trade-off is time in the car, which is easier to accept when the car is comfortable and someone else is driving.
We do not recommend specific airlines or routes, and flight networks change. Compare the options for your dates directly with the airlines or a travel agent, then book the transfer that matches the flight you choose.
The middle option: Gold Coast Airport
Between the two sits Gold Coast Airport at Coolangatta, on the Queensland border. From Ballina it is typically somewhere around an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half by road, further than Ballina's own airport but well short of Brisbane.
It can suit travellers who want more choice than Ballina without the full drive to Brisbane. The same time-zone care applies: flight times there are generally shown in Queensland time. Our Byron Bay to Gold Coast Airport transfer guide explains the border clocks in detail.
It is worth checking all three airports when you search for flights, not just the nearest and the largest. Sometimes the Gold Coast offers the direct flight Ballina does not, at a better time than Brisbane, and with an hour less in the car. Other times Brisbane's choice wins outright. Because we travel to all of them, the transfer can follow whichever flight suits you best, rather than the other way around.

Ballina, Gold Coast or Brisbane: side by side
This is a general guide. Flight options change, so check your dates before deciding. We have not included prices, which depend on your trip.
| Airport | Typical drive from Ballina | Choice of flights | International | Often best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ballina Byron Gateway | A short local drive | More limited | Via a connection | Direct domestic trips that suit the schedule |
| Gold Coast (Coolangatta) | Around 1 hr 15 to 1 hr 30 min | Wider | Some, check your route | More choice with a moderate drive |
| Brisbane | Around 2 hr 15 to 2 hr 25 min | Widest | Yes, dedicated terminal | International, more destinations, flexible timing |
The drive north to Brisbane
From Ballina, your chauffeur joins the Pacific Highway northbound, passes the turn-offs for Lennox Head, Byron Bay and Brunswick Heads, crosses into Queensland near Tweed Heads and continues up the M1 Pacific Motorway. The final leg uses the Gateway Motorway, which has tolled sections, to reach the airport.
The NSW section is generally a steady drive. Most delays happen on the M1 through the Gold Coast and Logan, particularly on weekday mornings when commuters are heading towards Brisbane, and on Friday afternoons and at the end of school holidays. Your chauffeur checks conditions before departure and builds in a buffer.
At Brisbane Airport, the domestic and international terminals are separate buildings a short drive apart. Tell us your flight number and which terminal you need, and you will be dropped at the departures area with your bags unloaded. If you are combining the airport run with a stop on the way, perhaps collecting a family member on the Gold Coast, mention it at booking so the timing allows for it. Our Coolangatta to Brisbane Airport guide covers the later part of the route in more detail.
For a mid-morning Brisbane flight, a very early pickup often means a quieter M1 and a calmer arrival. The car is comfortable enough that many passengers simply rest for most of the trip.
Time zones: Ballina clocks, Brisbane flights
Ballina is in NSW, which observes daylight saving from early October to early April. Brisbane does not. During those months, Ballina is an hour ahead of Brisbane, and your Brisbane flight time is shown in Queensland time.
For example, if your airline asks you to be at the terminal by 10 am Queensland time in December, that is 11 am in Ballina. Working back around two hours and twenty minutes plus a buffer, a pickup at around 8.15 am Ballina time would be a reasonable starting point. In winter, with the clocks aligned, the same pickup would move an hour earlier on the Ballina clock. We will confirm the real time from your flight details.
Pickups around Ballina and surrounds
We collect from Ballina itself and from the surrounding towns and rural areas. A few notes on each:
- Ballina and East Ballina: close to the highway, so the drive is close to the typical figure above.
- Lennox Head and Skennars Head: a little north along the coast, with a similar overall drive. See our Lennox Head to Brisbane Airport transfer guide.
- Alstonville and Wollongbar: inland on the plateau, adding some time before you reach the highway.
- Rural properties: include gate codes, driveway details and any directions, as some addresses are hard to find early in the morning.

Groups, luggage and long trips
International trips usually mean bigger bags, and families heading overseas often travel with prams and car seats of their own. Choosing the vehicle with all of that in mind makes the morning much easier.
The Executive Audi Sedan carries up to three passengers with standard suitcases. The Executive Mercedes V-Class seats up to seven, with room for bulky luggage, and child seats are available on request. Compare both in our fleet, and tell us about large items when you get an instant quote.
Long trips also mean long days. An overnight international departure may follow a full day of packing, and the return can land you back in Brisbane tired and jet-lagged. Booking both directions at once means the trip home is settled before you leave, with flight tracking so your pickup moves if the inbound flight is early or late.
The Mercedes van takes up to seven passengers and their luggage.

Frequently asked questions
How long is the drive from Ballina to Brisbane Airport?
Typically around two hours and fifteen to two hours and twenty-five minutes without traffic, covering roughly 200 to 210 km. Weekday morning traffic on the M1 and holiday periods can add time, so we include a buffer when setting your pickup.
Should I fly from Ballina or Brisbane?
If Ballina has a direct flight to your destination at a suitable time, it is usually the easier option because it is so close. If you need an international flight, a destination Ballina does not serve directly or more flexible timing, Brisbane is often the better choice despite the longer drive.
Is there a time difference between Ballina and Brisbane?
From early October to early April, yes. Ballina is in NSW, which observes daylight saving, so it is an hour ahead of Brisbane during those months. Brisbane flight times are shown in Queensland time.
Can you pick up from Lennox Head or Alstonville?
Yes. We collect from Lennox Head, Alstonville, Wollongbar and other towns around Ballina, as well as rural properties. Include the full address and any access notes when you book.
